ABOUT
Mexican-born United States Army soldier remembered for his bravery in World War II. For his 1945 acts during combat in Mertzwiller, France, he earned the prestigious Medal of Honor.
BEFORE FAME
During his early adulthood years, he worked on a farm in El Paso, Texas before joining the 36th Division of the Texas National Guard.

FAMILY LIFE
Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, he was orphaned as a baby and was subsequently raised in Texas by his uncle.
ASSOCIATED WITH
In August of 1945, he left the hospital room where he was still recovering from his battle wounds to travel to the White House and receive the Medal of Honor from then-President Harry S. Truman.
TRIVIA
He was awarded the Mexican government's Order of Military Merit.
