Chairperson of the National League for Democracy in Burma, who won the the Nobel Peace Prize for her non-violent struggles for democracy. She also served as the Minister of Labour of Myanmar from 2007 to 2012.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from St Hugh's College, Oxford.
Her father Aung San negotiated Burma's independence from the British Empire.
United States President Barack Obama personally advocated for her release during the US-ASEAN Summit of 2009.
She has been placed under house arrest by the Burmese government numerous times because they have viewed her as someone "likely to undermine the community peace and stability" to Burma.
